Essex and Wales collide when Gavin and Stacey fall in love and bring their friends, family and luggage with them. With the exception of the scenes in the first episode filmed in London, the entire series was filmed in Wales, including the scenes set in the film Essex. The house that the Shipmans (Gavin’s family) house is in Dinas Powys, a village 1 mile north-west of Barry, where the Wests (Stacey’s family) live. In series 3, Bryn and Gavin’s cars have completely different number plates to the previous series. Gavin’s blue Saxo went from T-reg (1999 model year) to X-reg (2000 model year). Bryn’s green Picasso changed from CV02 (2002 model, registered Cardiff) to HV54 (2004 model, registered Portsmouth). They are obviously different cars. Gavin & Stacey: Outtakes (2007). Nothing too crazy, it doesn’t move mountains or shift paradigms. It’s more of a character study about two (extended) families, one from Wales and one from England, who come together after a relationship and marriage. This is a simple, fun, friendly kind of show. I wish there were more shows like this, where the characters were kind, caring, community-minded, and despite their flaws, thought about and expressed love for the people in their lives. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s not artificial either. It’s an honest slice of life, and it’s beautiful. This isn’t the slapstick comedy that makes you laugh out loud that British comedies usually are. This book is more character-driven. Highly recommended.
