A Montana ranching family faces off against others encroaching on their land. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is an expert in the rodeo world. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) seems to frequently “forget” his Montana accent and reverts to the Southern California voice he often uses. (Review is for the first two seasons only) I went into this show not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are all excellent. It’s basically Mafia Wars in Montana with intermittent giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horseback while fishing). Costner is a master actor as the protagonist of the Duttons. The show is at its best when it’s showing the chessboard moves that the Duttons and their enemies engage in. The show gets stuck early in the second season, but starts rolling again about halfway through. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link as Monica and plays a very poor role, the story falls apart in strange ways and the acting is not up to par. I think Cole Hauser as Rip may be the strongest actor (without Costner himself) and I was looking forward to every scene Rip was in. Thomas Rainwater is also great. The story vibrates and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s “All The Pretty Horses” was a bit more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show is in a similar style. Highly recommended and I wish I hadn’t waited so long to see it.
